No. 4 Australia dispatches Israel in Quarterfinals

VANCOUVER, CANADA — World powerhouse and 4th-ranked Australia rolled past Israel, 21-9, in the Quarterfinals of the 2016 U-19 World Lacrosse Championships at Percy Perry Stadium on Wednesday.

Sagi Hashai beat Australian goalkeeper Luke Dobson on an extra-man opportunity, taking a feed from Joshua Bernstein to give Israel their only lead of the evening at 3:23 of the first quarter.

Gordon Purdie Jr. answered back with two straight goals before Nick Schulkin responded for Israel to tie the game at two. The Aussies would score the next 11 goals to take a 13-2 lead, holding the blue-and-white scoreless for nearly 34 minutes in the process.

Schulkin finished with four goals to lead Israel, while Bernstein, Hashai, Zachary Ornstein, Noah Knopf and Ilan Hascal added singles.

David Metzger (40:00, 2 saves, 11 GA) and Jonah Hirshorn (40:00, 5 saves, 10 GA) split time in goal; Metzger was dealt the loss.

Jordan Campbell led Australia with six goals and two assists, while Purdie chipped in three goals and six assists. Matthew Wood and Pius Bonjui also scored four goals apiece.

Israel meets Ireland (3-1) in the consolation semifinals on Thursday. The blue-and-white can clinch a promotion to the premier Blue Group with two straight wins.
