Israel takes group with big win over Ireland

TURKU, FINLAND — The Israel Men’s National Indoor team defeated Ireland, 18-7, to wrap up pool play and clinch the Kalevala Group at the European Box Lacrosse Championships at Gatorade Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Israelis jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back. Ireland trimmed the lead to 9-4, but the blue-and-white went on a six-goal run to take a 15-4 advantage.

Kyle Bergman (four goals, five assists), Adam Wolf (four goals, four assists) and Jean-Luc Chetner (four goals, one assist) led Israel, while Zachary Pall (two goals, one assist), Matthew Flapan (two goals) and Doug Utting (two assists) also chipped in.

Kevin Harper (one goal), Daniel Leventhal (one goal), Eric Fischer (one assist), Seth Mahler (one assist) and Ori Bar David (one assist) cracked the scoresheet as well.

Luke Coppinger and Drew Wichmann each scored two goals and one assist for Ireland.

Zachary Higgins (53:19, 26 saves, 5 GA) earned the win in goal with Andrew Copeland (6:41, 3 saves, 2 GA) also seeing action.

Israel (3-0) earned a first-round bye and will meet an opponent TBD in the Quarterfinals at 8:00 PM local on Thursday.
