Israel shocks Philippines in OT thriller, 7-6

BRYN MAWR, PENNSYLVANIA — Zachary Pall scored three straight goals, including the game-winner at 2:53 of overtime, to lift Israel past Philippines, 7-6, at the 2016 Philadelphia International Showdown on Sunday at Shipley School.

The blue-and-white led 4-3 at halftime, but Philippines scored three straight goals in the second half to grab a 6-4 advantage. Pall tied the game with 5:00 remaining and scored on the Israelis first possession in overtime.

Matt Opsahl (two goals, one assist), Greg Bortnick (one goal), Tyler-Brown Ortiz (one goal) and Ethan Kruteck (one assist) cracked the scoresheet for Israel.

Jakob Katzen (30:00, 3 GA) and Ryan Rosenthal (32:53, 3 GA) split time in goal; Rosenthal was credited the win.

Earlier in the day, Hungary held off a furious late rally by Israel to hold on for a 10-9 win. Hungary led 10-5 after three quarters, but the blue-and-white battled all the way back and nearly tied the game in the final seconds.

Matt Opsahl led a balanced Israel offensive effort with two goals and an assist, while Sam Roth chipped in one goal and one assist. Noah Hirshorn, Grey Soule, Dan Shelanski, Zach Pall and Dan Sussingham added singles. David Wolfson and Adam Wolf each had an assist.

Ryan Rosenthal (30:00, 6 GA) and Jakob Katzen (30:00, 4 GA) split time in goal.

While the tournament is a Men’s (Senior) division event, Israel is fielding a predominantly U-19 team as the program develops and transitions their player pool for the next level.

Israel (2-1) finishes the round-robin in a three-way tie with finalists Greece and Philippines, who advance following a complex tiebreaker. The blue-and-white meet Greece (0-3) tomorrow in a consolation match at 9:00 AM (no broadcast).
