Goldberg powers Ashkelon past Tel Aviv

ASHKELON, ISRAEL — Mitch Goldberg exploded for four goals and two assists to lead Ashkelon LC (2-3) over Tel Aviv LC (1-4), 11-8, in a decisive victory on Sunday night at New Municipal Stadium.

In a match littered with penalties for both squads, Ashkelon managed to take advantage of their man-up opportunities on three occasions to earn the win.

With the score tied 2-2 after one quarter, Ashkelon broke open a three goal lead in the second, and kept Tel Aviv at bay for the rest of the contest.

Evan Kalish (three goals) and Jesse Hartman (two goals) also contributed offensively for Ashkelon, while Juri Elonen (60:00, 12 saves, eight goals against) had another big evening between the pipes.

Matthew Flapan (three goals) and Philip Sussingham (two goals) led Tel Aviv. Reuven Dressler (60:00, 10 saves, 11 goals against) was dealt the loss in net.

With the victory, Ashkelon is within striking-distance of a home playoff game. They will meet Barak Netanya LC (2-2) at Wednesday’s Tel Aviv Lacrosse Festival. Tel Aviv (1-4) is in last place; they’ll host top-ranked Haifa LC (4-0) in the main event at Wolfson Fields on Wednesday.
