PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC — The Israel men’s national box lacrosse team saw their first action since their fourth-place finish at the 2015 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships on Saturday night.
The blue-and-white opened their “E-BOX” schedule against a familiar opponent, 6th-ranked Ireland, and held on to prevail 8-7 in a thriller at LCC Radotin.
The Islanders opened the scoring at 3:54, but it would be their only lead of the evening as Israel scored the next four goals and led 5-2 after one quarter and traded goals to a 6-4 half.
Bryan Hopper would open the quarter with a shorthanded goal for Israel, but the Irish battled back with three straight goals to tie the game at seven.
Kyle Bergman scored the game-winner with 4:12 remaining and the Israelis were able to hang on for the win.
Bergman finished with three goals, while Hopper and EL AL Most Valuable Player Danny Bialosky each scored twice.
Aaron Mathias and Franklin Pargh were each credited with an assist.
Andrew Copeland allowed just 7 goals over the full 60 minutes and earned the win in goal.
Both teams are developing their roster pools ahead of the 2017 ELF European Box Lacrosse Championships which will be held in Turku, Finland.
Israel is back in action against the host #7 Czech Republic on Sunday at 7:50 PM local time.
