NY Lizards roll, NYAC Women edge Israel

KINGS POINT, NEW YORK — The Israel men’s national team hung tight, but could not overcome the defending Major League Lacrosse champion New York Lizards on Sunday at US Merchant Marine Academy’s Brooks Stadium.

New York jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, holding the blue-and-white scoreless until 1:50 of the second quarter. The Israelis battled back, cutting the score to 6-3 and 8-4 at the half, but the Lizards kept their foot on the pedal in the second half to take the game out of reach.

Matthew Cherry again led Israel with three goals, while Kyle Bergman and Joshua Offit each chipped in one goal and one assist. Ari Sussman and Scott Weiner added singles for Israel.

Eric Schneider (30:00, 10 saves, 8 GA) was dealt the loss in goal. Sam Grinberg (15:00, 5 saves, 5 GA) and Michael Horowitz (30:00, 5 saves, 3 GA) also saw time in between the pipes.

NYAC women outlast Israel in double OT, 9-8

KINGS POINT, NEW YORK — New York Athletic Club took an early 4-0 lead and held on to overcome the Israel women’s national team, 9-8, in a double overtime thriller on Sunday at US Merchant Marine Academy’s Brooks Stadium.

Trailing 4-0 late in the first half, Israel scored three straight goals as they chipped away at the deficit, eventually taking a 6-5 lead late in the game. NYAC would notch the game at 6-6 to force overtime.

New York seemed to have clinched the win when they took a two-goal advantage late into the overtime period, however, Israel wouldn’t go away, as Ali Steinberg would tie the game off a free position opportunity with one second left.

Unfortunately for the Israelis, NYAC would score first in the sudden-victory double-OT period at 1:15.

Jayme Verman (two goals, one assist), Ali Steinberg (two goals), Jessi Steinberg (one goal, one assist) and Amanda Tuck (one goal, one assist) led the blue-and-white offensively, while Courtney Miller and Renee Kiviat each chipped in one goal.

Blaire Nathanson (66:15, 11 saves, 9 GA) was dealt the loss in goal.
