SURREY, ENGLAND — Shirel Fresh, Nikol Baglay and Gabriela Cheban combined for nine goals as the Israel women’s national team blanked China, 18-0, at the FIL Women’s World Cup on Sunday.
Fresh scored four times, Baglay three times and Cheban twice as the trio saw their first major action for the blue-and-white since they appeared at the U-19 Women’s World Cup in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2015. The performance of the young homegrown players is indicative of the growth of the Israeli women’s program.
Jayme Verman quarterbacked the offense for the Israelis with four assists, with Jessi Steinberg (one goal, two assists), Ali Steinberg (two goals) and Courtney Miller (two goals also having big days. Sarah Andersen, Alison Curwin, Kim Dubansky and Emma Lazaroff added singles, while Jenna Baverman, Sarah Meisenberg and Rachel Ozer chipped in one assist each.
Alex Freedman (30:00, 0 saves, 0 GA) and Blaire Nathanson (30:00, 3 saves, 0 GA) split time in goal; Freedman was credited the win.
With the win, Israel improved to 3-0 at the FIL World Cup. The blue-and-white can punch their ticket in the 10-team playoff bracket if they are able to defeat Belgium (1-2) on Monday. Opening draw is slated for 3:00 PM local / 5:00 PM Israel / 9:00 AM ET.
